AXIT publishes strategy paper on collaboration along the supply chain

Collaboration is seen as a key to reducing complexity in logistics. But what does collaboration mean in practice for the cooperation between companies from industry, trade and logistics service? This is the question that AXIT has engaged in with a current strategy paper on the topic of collaboration.

In logistics it is imperative to adjust to dynamically changing processes which result from the work-sharing world and an atomized variety of products.

Against this background companies need strong allies. Strong in being able to manage complex tasks in today’s logistics together – across companies and countries. Fast, flexibly and straightforward. This is the only way to successfully reduce the cost which is invariably linked to complex processes and to make the risks of global supply chains controllable.

Collaboration is the key to this. Close and intensive cooperation of shippers and logistics providers is the guarantor for company success in a time where static business models are increasingly being replaced by flexible networks.

The strategy paper by AXIT AG, operator of the logistics platform AX4, deals with the complexity of collaboration. AXIT got the incentive to work out this document together with their customers. The paper examines the topic of collaboration from the different perspectives of shippers, logistics providers and IT. It describes opportunities and risks and creates awareness for success factors needed to sustainably realize collaboration.

All participants agree on one thing: The growing requirements that logistics is facing will hardly be manageable anymore without collaboration. However, for a successful implementation the acting managers’ attitude must be just as right as the IT basis on which an exchange of data and information can be mapped globally. “Isolation is a no-go – those who think only within their own company boundaries will be offside”, a logistics manager said during the research for the strategy paper.

“The close and intensive cooperation of shippers and logistics providers offers many opportunities beyond mere cost saving. Collaboration reduces complexity and increases agility for quicker and more qualified reactions to changes and makes for a more stable delivery chain”, says Frauke Heistermann, member of management of AXIT AG and the strategy paper’s author.

The consulted logistics managers increasingly see IT as a driver of collaboration processes. Assuming an active role in this field results from the combination of technology and the IT provider’s market know-how. As a driver of solutions the IT provider can – for example – combine new technologies with industry know-how and thus enable certain forms of collaboration in the first place.
